Dry Rot

What causes Dry Rot?

Dry rot is a type of fungal decay that affects timber, causing it to become brittle, crumbly, and structurally unsound. The primary fungus responsible for dry rot is Serpula lacrymans, which can thrive in conditions where wood is exposed to moisture for extended periods such as homes on the Oregon coast.

Causes of Dry Rot

Dry rot is caused by a combination of factors:

  1. Moisture: The presence of moisture is essential for the fungi to grow. This can come from leaks, condensation, or poor ventilation.
  2. Poor Ventilation: Lack of airflow can cause moisture to accumulate, creating an ideal environment for fungal growth.
  3. Warmth: While the fungi can grow in a range of temperatures, they thrive in warmer conditions.
  4. Lack of Sunlight: Fungi prefer dark, hidden areas, which is why dry rot often goes unnoticed until significant damage has occurred.

Identifying Dry Rot

  • Smell: A musty, damp odor is often the first sign.
  • Appearance: Wood may appear shrunken, darkened, or have deep cracks. You may also see white, fluffy mycelium or rusty red spore dust.
  • Texture: Affected wood becomes brittle and crumbly, breaking easily under pressure.
